CalArts Partners with The Reef/Maker City LA on Artist Residency Program

IA11_Web_ArtistInResidenceGENHdr Maker City LA is proud to announce a partnership with California Institute for The Arts (CalArts), whereby the internationally recognized institution for the performing and visual arts will program a joint CalArts/REEF/Maker City LA  residency through September 2015.

This program offers CalArts graduates from the School of Critical Studies and the School of Art a unique opportunity to continue their ambitious practices in a public context as they transition from the institution. The CalArts REEF residency fosters a significant connection between writing and art making and aims to select artists whose projects require the support of a studio and resources at crucial points in their early careers.

We are thrilled to welcome the following artists into the program:

Elliot Vrendenburg – MA, School of Critical Studies, Aesthetics and Politics Program

Emerson Whitney – MFA, School of Critical Studies, Creative Writing Program

Danielle Bustillo – MFA, School of Art, Art and Technology Program

Eve Lauryn La Fountain –MFA, School of Art, Photo and Media Program and School of Film/Video, Film/Video Program

These graduates promise to fulfill diverse and engaged studio projects over the next six months. We look forward to seeing their work as they progress through their residencies.

The current residency runs April - September, 2015 in the Maker City LA AIR space (suite 1150)

Maker City LA Presents Marie Joxe-Collins (Our New Artist In Residence)!

SELMA-WANG-2 We are proud to announce the residency of LA-based visual artist and storyteller, Marie Joxe-Collins.

Marie will use the Artist in Residence space at Maker City LA to exhibit an audiovisual pitch installation on her film Selma & Wang.

“Selma, 12, survivor of an ecological disaster, finds under her bed, Wang, a cute, yet very powerful monster that shows her how to travel from RealTime to DreamTime, until one night they both get stuck in between and they have to combine their creative minds to go back to a new Reality.”

Marie will share her creative process in workshops and online presence and will edit the final trailer of the film with your imput! Stay tuned!

FLORA GOLDEN AT STUDIO ELEVEN by Paula Tiberius 

I don’t know what it is about paintings on cardboard, but I usually love them. Maybe it’s something to do with the humility it connotes, or the fragility, I’m not sure, but the art show I attended on the weekend at Studio Eleven in downtown L.A. featured an artist who used it beautifully. Her piece Route 66 is elegant and playful, and keeps you guessing as your eye moves around unraveling the many meanings and materials.

Fantasy at the Edge is the name of the exhibition which also features work by Kathleen Losey, Tere Abdala-Romano and Linda Levi-Baum. The show is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and the last Wednesday of the month from 12 – 4pm and by appointment through Dec 7, 2014.

 Artist's Statement:

Paige Smith, AKA A Common Name, is an international street artist and fine art sculptor. Her artworks are unique three-dimensional “urban geode” installations that represent crystalline, geodesic rock formations. The finished pieces explode out of walls and cracks in the city, hidden treasures waiting to be discovered as people go about their daily routine.  Her work has a palpable sense of "magical realism" that says, "Take a look around, notice the small things. Find wonder and beauty in the mundane."

“Deranged Amalgamation” is Smith’s latest and largest site-specific installation to date. The piece fills the composition of the wall, breaking apart when a column interferes and concentrating once again on the opposite wall which tapers off organically. The amount of effort poured into these usually temporary works are a dreamer’s search for deranged mastery through an amalgamation of action and process.

CNN Honors Our Friends at WriteGirl

Congratulations to our friend Keren Taylor,  for being selected as one of CNN's 2014 Heroes. This initiative honors "Everyday People" who are "Changing the World".  As the founder of WriteGirl, an LA-based organization that's giving teen girls a voice by teaching them to wield the power of the pen, Taylor certainly fits the bill.  No stranger to high level praise for her amazing work, Taylor was presented with a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award  by Michelle Obama in 2013. We ourselves are honored to have had the pleasure of hosting several Write Girl workshops at Maker City LA over the course of this year and look forward to continued collaboration with this wonderful organization.  Watch CNN's coverage of a Write Girl Fiction workshop that took place earlier this year at Maker City LA below and be prepared to be inspired.

Creative District Dubs Maker City LA A "Great Resource For Indie Filmmakers"

Our friends at Creative District wrote an awesome post on their blog as a follow up to last week's indie filmmaker mixer here, at Maker City LA.  In addition to Seed & Spark, NationBuilder and Technicolor's new online platform for creative collaboration, we're proud to have been listed as an essential resource for Indie filmmakers. Here's an excerpt:

This Monday we hosted an independent filmmaker mixer at Maker City L.A. along with our friends at Seed & Spark and NationBuilder.

Over 100 L.A. film and media makers joined us for a night of inspiring conversations, featuring  a panel and Q&A with filmmakers Mia Chang and Brian Dannelly, moderated by Karen Worden ofFilm Courage.

For those who didn't attend, we’d like to introduce you to our event collaborators. Each of these organizations offers important resources for filmmakers and are all based in Los Angeles.

1. Creative District is a professional network for filmmakers and artists to collaborate. Showcase your work, find opportunities, and build your creative career all in one place. Over 10,000 creatives are collaborating on thousands of projects on CD, and we’d love to have you among them. Sign up today.

2. Seed&Spark is building a truly independent film community where filmmakers and audiences join forces to fund, promote and watch the best new independent films. Seed&Spark’s film-specific crowdfunding tool - the WishList - allows supporters to buy or loan specific items to a production (all of which count toward the fundraising goal). Their fees are also the lowest in the business, and their success rate is the highest (70%!) Filmmakers who choose to stream their films on Seed&Spark keep 80% of the transactional revenue, and Seed*Spark takes no rights. It’s your film!

3. Nationbuilder is community organizing software used by filmmakers, studios, agencies, and actors to help them raise funds, connect with influences and fans, and increase visibility of their work.

TechShop Los Angeles Town Hall: Tech & Innovation in LA Twitter Recap

techshop floorMaker Manifesto Earlier this week, TechShop CEO Mark Hatch  returned to Maker City LA at The REEF to lead a discussion about the state of LA's tech and innovation landscape with special guests Ava Bromberg (The REEF SVP),  Michelle Garakian (Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti) and Brent Bushnell (CEO of Two Bit Circus). Local tech innovators, maker community members, entrepreneurs and potential investors came out to join the conversation and to support TechShop's efforts to open a 9th outpost  at The REEF, in downtown LA.

TechShop Town Hall Twitter Recap

IMG_0367IMG_0374 Last week we broke awesome news that TechShop has plans not only to come to LA, but to make The REEF (where Maker City LA is based) their latest home!  Friday evening, the San Francisco-based company's CEO Mark Hatch and Founder Jim Newton lead an invigorating information session at Maker City LA about the significance and influence of the Maker Movement.  They also shared details about the facility as well as the goals for funding and membership commitment to be achieved over the next four months in order to make TechShop Los Angeles a reality.

First ArtsTech LA meet-up at CultureBrain Academy at Maker City LA

IMG_0382 Last Saturday, #ArtsTech founder and Director of the New Museum’s Incubator for Art, Technology and Design, Julia Kaganskiy, spearheaded an exploratory discussion about the unique terrain of LA’s Art + Technology communities and culture. A diverse group of  LA-based artists, makers, technophiles, museums, creative professionals turned out to mix, mingle and hear from a distinguished panel of experts that included: Kaganskiy, Bret Nicely (Associate Director of Digital Media at MOCA), Amy Heibel (VP Technology, Web and Digital Media at LACMA), Mileece (Sonic and environmental installation artist - and Maker Cit LA Artist in Residence), Mark Allen (Founder of Machine Project), Sharon Ann Lee (Culture Analyst, Co-Creator Maker City LA) and George Bloom (Executive Producer at CBS Digital/Visual Effects).

Maker City LA Welcomes Artist In Residence Mileece

Maker City LA is proud to announce the residency of LA-based experience designer & sonic artist, Mileece. Her work ‘promoting ecology through technology and the arts’ has brought her international critical acclaim as a composer and installation artist. Mileece will use the Artist in Residence space at Maker City LA  to conceive and create interactive objects and experiences for a number of projects  including a first-of-its-kind interactive eco-classroom at the Lycée International Français in Los Angeles and an installation at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. We know that her presence will enrich and inspire our community.

Mileece's artist residency at Maker City LA runs through April-August 2014.

More about Mileece: 

Mileece is an experience designer & sonic artist, working as a renewable energy ambassador.

‘Formations’, her debut album, inspired by cycles and formations in nature (“beautiful, real, musical science”, BBC), was the result of her initial works in computer generated compositions, using Super Collider, an object-oriented programming language.

Its success led her on international tours with the Icelandic pop group Múm and landed her a residency at BOX Innovation Centre at the London School of Economics. There, hailed by the likes of Brian Eno, she created her first interactive ‘Aesthetic Sonification’ installation with hand-made sensor based instruments and initiated the design and development of TreeWe’vr, a technology platform enabling Human/Plant communication through sound.

Presented as the installation series ‘Soniferous Eden’, TreeWe’vr has toured an array of prestigious museums, festivals and venues in Europe and the US.

Initially developed for her touring solo sonic performance work with the Centre Dramatique National, France, and featured on Arté TV, Mileece’s interactive works include a series of handmade found & felted forest remnants, turned wearable sensor-based instruments generating music live from coded compositions.

Also an avid field recording artist, her recent performances at the MoMA, NYC & Decibel Festival Seattle, combined her recordings from Canadian icebergs to the Costa Rican Jungle with live generative music from her wearable instruments and the TreeWe’vr plant interface, along with vocals, acoustic instruments and orchestration. Complimented by live generative visuals incorporating plant data, these performance debuted excerpts from her forthcoming work on a series of ‘sonic films’ concentrating on the themes of ecology, culture and philosophy.

Mileece is currently the resident artist at the Lycée International Français in Los Angeles where she has recently converted a 1996 school bus into a ‘travelling interactive forest’ and is installing the first permanent zero-emission TreeWe’vr Pod as an interactive eco-classroom in a geo-dome.

She also sits on the Board of Directors of Cygnus Atratus Group for fuel cell innovation helping to promote renewable energy based arts and culture, advance fuel cell manufacturing and promote waste to energy markets.

Our first photo shoot - with uber-cool LA-based leather bag line, Vere Verto - is underway as I type. A flurry of other creative production has taken place at Maker City LA  in recent weeks  - from casting sessions and table reads to indie-film shoots - and with  Jon Setzen and Bobby Solomon's design and technology podcast,  The Build Up,  recording bi-monthly from our digs, we're creating  a thriving one-stop production destination in DTLA!
