More about Mileece:

Mileece is an experience designer & sonic artist, working as a renewable energy ambassador.

Formations’, her debut album, inspired by cycles and formations in nature (“beautiful, real, musical science”, BBC), was the result of her initial works in computer generated compositions, using Super Collider, an object-oriented programming language.

Its success led her on international tours with the Icelandic pop group Múm and landed her a residency at BOX Innovation Centre at the London School of Economics. There, hailed by the likes of Brian Eno, she created her first interactive ‘Aesthetic Sonification’ installation with hand-made sensor based instruments and initiated the design and development of TreeWe’vr, a technology platform enabling Human/Plant communication through sound.

Presented as the installation series ‘Soniferous Eden’, TreeWe’vr has toured an array of prestigious museums, festivals and venues in Europe and the US.

Initially developed for her touring solo sonic performance work with the Centre Dramatique National, France, and featured on Arté TV, Mileece’s interactive works include a series of handmade found & felted forest remnants, turned wearable sensor-based instruments generating music live from coded compositions.

Also an avid field recording artist, her recent performances at the MoMA, NYC & Decibel Festival Seattle, combined her recordings from Canadian icebergs to the Costa Rican Jungle with live generative music from her wearable instruments and the TreeWe’vr plant interface, along with vocals, acoustic instruments and orchestration. Complimented by live generative visuals incorporating plant data, these performance debuted excerpts from her forthcoming work on a series of ‘sonic films’ concentrating on the themes of ecology, culture and philosophy.

Mileece is currently the resident artist at the Lycée International Français in Los Angeles where she has recently converted a 1996 school bus into a ‘travelling interactive forest’ and is installing the first permanent zero-emission TreeWe’vr Pod as an interactive eco-classroom in a geo-dome.

She also sits on the Board of Directors of Cygnus Atratus Group for fuel cell innovation helping to promote renewable energy based arts and culture, advance fuel cell manufacturing and promote waste to energy markets.

TechShop Announces Plans to Open in Downtown Los Angeles

techshop-logo-3d Amazing News today about TechShop's plans to open in DTLA (which would mean an amazing partnership with Maker City LA)!!  Talk about a Maker dream come true!  Full press release below:

The REEF partnership is first in “Bring TechShop to Your City” campaign

SAN JOSE, Calif. , March 19, 2014 -- TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself (DIY) workshop and fabrication studio with locations across the United States, today announced it has signed a Letter of Intent with ownership of The REEF to pursue its first facility in Los Angeles, CA. TechShop would target to open later this year at The REEF, the new name for the LA Mart building, a design and innovation hub in downtown that also houses Maker City LA.

“When we launched ‘Bring TechShop to Your City’ last year, Los Angeles was one of our dream cities,” said Mark Hatch, CEO of TechShop. “It’s remarkable that in less than six months, we have not only generated enough interest in the LA community but also secured a partner like The REEF that puts Los Angeles firmly on our map of expansion efforts in 2014. We are thrilled to bring TechShop to Los Angeles, one of the creative capitals of the world.”

The two organizations will host an information session at Maker City LA (1933 S Broadway, Los Angeles, 11th floor) on Friday, March 21 at 7:00PM Pacific Time, which is open to the public. TechShop and executives from The REEF will discuss details about the facility as well as the goals for funding and membership commitment to be achieved over the next four months in order to make TechShop Los Angeles a reality. To RSVP for the event, go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bring-techshop-to-la-tickets-10984122807.

The REEF, home to the Maker City LA, Magic Box, and LA Mart communities, is an innovation hub that provides access to design, co-working, creative office, trade show space and the West Coast’s leading gift and home furnishing source for retailers and designers. Easily accessible by public transportation and major freeways, The REEF sits in downtown LA, near the University of Southern California campus and next to LA Trade Tech.

“We are delighted to help bring TechShop to Los Angeles, and to downtown," said Ava Bromberg, Senior Vice President of Business Development for The REEF. "Our aim with The REEF is to help provide creative businesses the tools they need to be successful, all under one roof. We have spaces for creation, exhibition and commerce, and tens of thousands of retailers and consumers look to our building as a resource for new products and ideas. TechShop is a fantastic addition to our creative habitat, and we are excited to help welcome and grow their community at The REEF.”

“TechShop would be a great addition to Downtown Los Angeles,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “I'm excited at the prospect of having this new infrastructure to support innovation, creative manufacturing, and small businesses in the heart of our City.”

TechShop Los Angeles marks the first partnership to grow out of the “Bring TechShop to Your City” campaign. The campaign began in September 2013 with a goal of raising $60 million to build new facilities in communities across America. The new fundraising, made possible through the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, has enabled TechShop to invite a broader group of investors, including smaller and community-minded investors, to participate in the business and bring TechShop to their cities.

In order to bring TechShop to Los Angeles by the end of the year, TechShop will seek to secure $1.7M in funding through individual, corporate and institutional investments as well as advance membership commitment from those interested in bringing TechShop to the city.

Matt Weaver: Rock of Ages

Last month we were inspired by Rock of Ages and Jiro Dreams of Sushi producer, Matt Weaver's Creative Mornings talk on rebellion at CultureBrain Academy at Maker City LA.  If you missed it (or even if you didn't) check out the video below for a radical recap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsosouhU790

Creative Mornings Los Angeles with Rock of Ages Creator Matt Weaver

Weaver "believes and invests in youth"

The photo wall at CultureBrain Academy underwent a fitting face lift for CreativeMornings Los Angeles's February lecture last Friday. The blue-sky-and-hot-air-balloon backdrop (created for January's theme: Childhood) was replaced with images of winged sushi in honor of Rock of Ages creator/producer and Jiro Dreams of Sushi producer, Matt Weaver.

Weaver, a natural-born storyteller who spoke masterfully to this month's theme: Rebel, captivated the audience with tales of a colorful childhood in 1970's NYC (where he was raised by a gay, movie studio marketing whiz,  father....and possibly the world's first mannie), and subsequent adolescence in Los Angeles (where he landed a job on the Disney lot at  age 13).

Weaver continued to cut his teeth working for the likes of Jeffrey Katzenberg before going on to sell dozens of his own movies and eventually developing the musical, Rock of Ages, which has been nominated for 5 Tony Awards, adapted into a Hollywood film,  and is currently the 31st longest running show on Broadway.

Weaver made clear that his path to success was not an easy one, but a winning combination of "passion and naivety" ultimately paid off... and paved the way for subsequent success stories including his role as producer of the critically acclaimed Documentary film Jiro Dreams of Sushi (hence the fitting photo wall backdrop).

Little Branch Foods, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, and Boxed Water brought it!

The  talk a was super-inspiring, insightful and peppered with far more humor  judge for Miss Fire Island) and fun facts than this mere recap could ever relay - suffice it to say that we expect to see more  "rebel" behavior from Weaver as he continues to produce entertaining, culture-rich content.

Enjoy these movie trailers from Rock of Ages, Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Surfwise, Weaver's fascinating 2008 documentary about  the 11-member, 70's surf-chasing Paskowitz family.

America's Next Great City Is Inside L.A.

by Brett Martin

For decades, Downtown has been the dark center of L.A.: a wasteland of half-empty office buildings and fully empty streets. But amid the glittering towers and crumbly Art Deco facades, a new generation of adventurous chefs, bartenders, loft dwellers, artists, and developers are creating a neighborhood as electrifying and gritty as New York in the '70s. Brett Martin navigates his way through the coolest new downtown in America...
